Día de los Muertos
O.Henry magazine is an arts and entertainment publication based in Greensboro, North Carolina, dedicated to telling the stories of its local community. Due to limited photographs for a feature on a Día de los Muertos gathering, I created custom illustrations to capture the atmosphere of the event, honoring both mourning and celebration. The artwork drew from traditional Día de los Muertos imagery — sugar skulls and cempasúchil (marigolds) — illuminated by candlelight to reflect the warmth of community, remembrance, and cultural tradition. This project allowed me to explore how illustration can complement photography, resulting in a richer, more immersive visual story when resources were limited.
