The Renaissance Man

PineStraw magazine is a local arts and entertainment publication celebrating the voices, arts, and culture of the Sandhills region of North Carolina. For a feature story in the April 2023 issue, I designed layouts that combined textures, typography, and the magazine’s editorial style guidelines to highlight the work and process of a local mural artist. Playful visual elements were incorporated to engage readers and create a dynamic, immersive experience. The color palette was sampled directly from the photographs to harmonize with the imagery, softening the spray-paint textures and unifying the overall composition. A cement-textured background added a tactile quality, inviting readers to experience the page as an extension of the artist’s canvas — an approach that mirrored the article’s exploration of the artist’s career and painting methods.
