Truths & Tales: A Fresh Take on Blackbeard the Pirate is an abridged feature story originally published in PineStraw magazine’s sister publication, Walter. To give the article a distinct identity from Walter’s editorial design and historically inspired map illustration, I established a clean, modern visual style that complemented the story’s “fresh perspective” on the Blackbeard legend. I employed a bold, bright color palette, selected a clean sans-serif font for the title and subheads, and illustrated a minimalist-style map. To create cohesion across the spreads, I carried the border design throughout the article and incorporated a wave motif as a decorative element for subheads. Since many of the images featured bright reds, I chose vermilion for the title and subheads, balancing the layout and ensuring the text remained prominent without competing with the visuals.
